Break The Silence- Violence in Teen Dating (video) www.cdc.gov/CDCTV/BreakTheSilence/
It may shock you to know that one out of every eleven teens reports being hit or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the past twelve months. But why is that, and how can we change it? In "Break The Silence: Stop the Violence," parents talk with teens about developing healthy, respectful relationships before they start dating.
Intimate Partner Violence (29:00)
While intimate partner abuse can occur in same-sex couples, the abuser in the vast majority of cases is a man, his target a woman. This program from The Doctor Is In profiles Buffalo, New York, where the medical community, social and psychiatric services, police, and courts have formed a coalition to reduce the incidence of partner abuse and help the victims. Among those who comment are Dr. Susan McLeer, the head of Erie County Medical Center's psychiatry department; Katey Joyce, director of a shelter for battered women; and Jessica Benigni, chair of the Erie County Coalition Against Family Violence. A Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Production. http://digital.films.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?aid=2709&xtid=29966
Chapter 9 Abuse Later in Life
Video- 5 case studies (40 min) http://digital.films.com/PortalViewVideo.aspx?xtid=43873
As appalling and unacceptable as domestic violence is, it often goes unaddressed—especially when inflicted upon those least likely to speak up. This program sheds light on abuse of the elderly with real-world, unscripted case studies. Norman, in his late seventies, suffers frequent beatings at the hands of his two adult sons, but refrains from pressing charges for fear of more severe abuse. Dorothy’s grown son also assaults her on a regular basis, even though “I never really expect it from him.” Lucille’s daughter doesn’t physically hurt her, but she does allow Lucille’s violent ex-husband to stay with them, much to Lucille’s distress—while Pat has resigned herself to living with her brutal husband and Mary claims she is “not afraid” of her abusive son, who will soon be released from prison. Counseling and support group sessions make up an important component of the film.
